De La Soul – Discography (1989-2006) [FLAC]
Hip-Hop | 6.36 GB | Flac Tracks

At the time of its 1989 release, De La Soul’s debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, was hailed as the future of hip-hop. With its colorful, neo-psychedelic collage of samples and styles, plus the Long Island trio’s low-key, clever rhymes and goofy humor, the album sounded like nothing else in hip-hop. Where most of their contemporaries drew directly from old-school rap, funk, or Public Enemy’s dense sonic barrage, De La Soul were gentler and more eclectic, taking in not only funk and soul, but also pop, jazz, reggae, and psychedelia. Though their style initially earned both critical raves and strong sales, De La Soul found it hard to sustain their commercial momentum in the ’90s as their alternative rap was sidetracked by the popularity of considerably harder-edged gangsta rap.
De La Soul formed while the trio members — Posdnuos (born Kelvin Mercer, August 17, 1969), Trugoy the Dove (born David Jude Jolicoeur, September 21, 1968), and Pasemaster Mase (born Vincent Lamont Mason Jr., March 27, 1970) — were attending high school in the late ’80s. The stage names of all of the members derived from in-jokes: Posdnuos was an inversion of Mercer’s DJ name, Sound-Sop; Trugoy was an inversion of Jolicoeur’s favorite food, yogurt. De La Soul’s demo tape, “Plug Tunin’,” came to the attention of Prince Paul, the leader and producer of the New York rap outfit Stetsasonic. Prince Paul played the tape to several colleagues and helped the trio land a contract with Tommy Boy Records.
Prince Paul produced De La Soul’s debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, which was released in the spring of 1989. Several critics and observers labeled the group as a neo-hippie band because the record praised peace and love as well as proclaiming the dawning of “the D.A.I.S.Y. age” (Da Inner Sound, Y’all). Though the trio was uncomfortable with the hippie label, there was no denying that the humor and eclecticism presented an alternative to the hardcore rap that dominated hip-hop. De La Soul quickly were perceived as the leaders of a contingent of New York-based alternative rappers that also included A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, the Jungle Brothers, and Monie Love; all of these artists dubbed themselves the Native Tongues posse.
For a while, it looked as if De La Soul and the Native Tongues posse would eclipse hardcore hip-hop in terms of popularity. “Me, Myself and I” became a Top 40 pop hit in the U.S. (number one R&B), while the album reached number 24 (number one R&B) and went gold. At the end of the year, 3 Feet High and Rising topped many best-of-the-year lists, including The Village Voice’s. With all of the acclaim came some unwanted attention, most notably in the form of a lawsuit by the Turtles. De La Soul had sampled the Turtles’ “You Showed Me” and layered it with a French lesson on a track on 3 Feet High called “Transmitting Live from Mars,” without getting the permission of the ’60s pop group. the Turtles won the case, and the decision not only had substantial impact on De La Soul, but on rap in general. Following the suit, all samples had to be legally cleared before an album could be released. Not only did this have the end result of rap reverting back to instrumentation, thereby altering how the artists worked, it also meant that several albums in the pipeline had to be delayed in order for samples to clear. One of those was De La Soul’s second album, De La Soul Is Dead.
When De La Soul Is Dead was finally released in the spring of 1991, it received decidedly mixed reviews, and its darker, more introspective tone didn’t attract as big an audience as its lighter predecessor. The album peaked at number 26 pop on the U.S. charts, number 24 R&B, and spawned only one minor hit, the number 22 R&B single “Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey).” De La Soul worked hard on their third album, finally releasing the record in late 1993. The result, entitled Buhloone Mindstate, was harder and funkier than either of its predecessors, yet it didn’t succumb to gangsta rap. Though it received strong reviews, the album quickly fell off the charts after peaking at number 40, and only “Breakadawn” broke the R&B Top 40. The same fate greeted the trio’s fourth album, Stakes Is High. Released in the summer of 1996, the record was well reviewed, yet it didn’t find a large audience and quickly disappeared from the charts.
Four years later, De La Soul initiated what promised to be a three-album series with the release of Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump; though reviews were mixed, it was greeted warmly by record buyers, debuting in the Top Ten. The second title in the series, AOI: Bionix, even featured a video hit with “Baby Phat,” but Tommy Boy and the trio decided to end their relationship soon after. De La Soul subsequently signed their AOI label to Sanctuary Urban (run by Beyoncé’s father, Mathew Knowles) and released The Grind Date in October 2004. Two years later the group issued Impossible Mission: TV Series, Pt. 1, a collection of new and previously unreleased material.

Gang Starr – Studio Discography (1989-2006) [FLAC]
flac – lossless | 3.07 GB | Hip-Hop

The most influential MC-and-DJ tandem of the 1990s, Gang Starr set new standards for East Coast rap with a pair of early-’90s touchstones, Step in the Arena (1991) and Daily Operation (1992), whose appeal has only grown over the decades. Beginning with these classic releases, both listeners and critics heaped mounds of praise upon Guru and DJ Premier — the former because of his socially conscious lyrics and no-nonsense stance, the latter because of his DJ-style beat-making and jazzy sound. Following Step in the Arena and Daily Operation, Premier became one of New York’s most demanded producers, crafting hits for the city’s finest MCs, including the Notorious B.I.G., Nas, Jay-Z, and KRS-One. Guru likewise collaborated with plenty of well-known artists — Roy Ayers, Donald Byrd, N’Dea Davenport — on his solo debut, Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1 (1993), and its series of follow-ups. Following Hard to Earn (1994) — the duo’s fourth Gang Starr collaboration overall — Guru and Premier began focusing primarily on their solo projects, reuniting infrequently — too infrequently, many fans felt — for albums such as Moment of Truth (1998) and The Ownerz (2003). During this period of solo activity, Gang Starr became increasingly recognized as a touchstone, one that critics and hip-hop purists frequently cited as a standard-bearer for streetwise, socially conscious East Coast rap.

Guru (born Keith Edward Elam on July 17, 1966, in Boston, MA; died following a battle with cancer on April 19, 2010) and Premier (born Christopher Edward Martin on March 21, 1966, in Houston, TX) began working together in 1989. Guru had founded Gang Starr a couple years earlier, in 1987, and had already established a working relationship with Wild Pitch Records. The partnership of Guru and Premier as Gang Starr led to a formative debut album, No More Mr. Nice Guy (1989), and its featured single, “Words I Manifest.” The DJ-spotlight track “DJ Premier in Deep Concentration” is another highlight of the album, which spent years out of print. Between albums, in 1990, Guru and Premier contributed a song, “Jazz Thing,” to the Mo’ Better Blues soundtrack. Gang Starr subsequently moved to Chrysalis Records for their second album, Step in the Arena (1991), on which they perfected the approach of their debut, that is, a stark, hard-hitting jazz-rap production style, complete with Premier’s masterful DJ cutting, over which Guru’s battle-rap-hardened yet smoothly delivered lyrics — often thoughtful, sly, and streetsmart — take flight. Gang Starr’s third album, Daily Operation (1992), furthered the duo’s approach stylistically; widely considered an East Coast rap classic, it’s arguably Guru and Premier’s finest work, along with its predecessor.

Beginning in 1993, Guru and Premier began working separately. Guru’s debut album, Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1 (1993), took the so-called jazz-rap style to a new level, featuring jazz musicians such as Lonnie Liston Smith, Branford Marsalis, Ronny Jordan, Donald Byrd, and Roy Ayers, along with guest vocalists such as N’Dea Davenport (of the Brand New Heavies) and MC Solaar (of French rap fame). Meanwhile, Premier produced six tracks for KRS-One’s solo debut, Return of the Boom Bap (1993); moreover, in 1994 he proceeded to produce three tracks for Nas’ debut, Illmatic (“N.Y. State of Mind,” “Memory Lane [Sittin' in da Park],” “Represent”); two for the Notorious B.I.G.’s debut, Ready to Die (“Unbelievable,” an unreleased remix of “Machine Gun Funk”); five for the self-titled debut of Branford Marsalis’ Buckshot LeFonque project; the entirety of Jeru the Damaja’s debut, The Sun Rises in the East; and also a handful of remixes for various artists. Amid all of this activity, Guru and Premier found time to record their fourth album, Hard to Earn (1994), which was more hardcore-fashioned — as was the style at the time, in the wake of Death Row’s uprising — than past Gang Starr albums and, also unlike past efforts, featured guest rappers. The album spawned the duo’s biggest hit to date, “Mass Appeal,” their first to break the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart (peaking at number 67).

Following Hard to Earn, Guru and Premier resumed their solo activity. Guru released Jazzmatazz, Vol. 2: The New Reality (1995) and a various-artists compilation, Guru Presents Ill Kid Records (1995), while Premier produced the bulk of Livin’ Proof (1995), the debut of Gang Starr affiliates Group Home (a duo comprised of Lil’ Dap and Melachi the Nutcracker, who both had been featured on Hard to Earn). Also in 1995, Premier produced three tracks on KRS-One, the rapper’s second solo album; and two tracks on Hold It Down, the third album by Das EFX; as well as assorted remixes and one-off productions. While Guru remained more or less inactive during 1996-1997, releasing no solo albums, Premier stayed busy, producing the entirety of Jeru the Damaja’s second album, Wrath of the Math (1996); five tracks on Bahamadia’s debut, Kollage (1996); six on M.O.P.’s second album, Firing Squad (1996); three on Jay-Z’s debut, Reasonable Doubt (1996) (“D’evils,” “Friend or Foe,” “Bring It On”); one on Nas’ second album, It Was Written (1996) (“I Gave You Power”); two on Jay-Z’s second album, In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 (1997) (“A Million & One Questions,” “Friend or Foe ’98″); two on the Notorious B.I.G.’s second album, Life After Death (1997) (“Kick in the Door,” “Ten Crack Commandments”); four on O.C.’s second album, Jewelz (1997); two on Rakim’s solo debut, The 18th Letter (1997); two on the Lady of Rage’s debut, Necessary Roughness (1997); and more.

In 1998, after four years between albums, Gang Starr returned with Moment of Truth, their first album to chart number one (on the R&B/Hip-Hop album chart, that is; it peaked at number six overall, still their best showing commercially to date). Moment of Truth was a significant departure from past Gang Starr efforts, very much contemporary in style; for example, the album features numerous guests (Inspectah Deck, Scarface, G. Dep, K-Ci & JoJo, M.O.P.) and bore little trace of the duo’s jazz-rap beginnings. The lead single, “You Know My Steez,” became the second Gang Starr hit to break into the Billboard Hot 100 chart (peaking at number 76). A double-disc retrospective, Full Clip: A Decade of Gang Starr (1999), subsequently marked the duo’s ten-year anniversary. In the years that followed, Guru and Premier continued to focus on their own work. Guru continued his Jazzmatazz series, beginning with a third volume, Streetsoul, in 2000; he also released solo rap albums, beginning with Baldhead Slick & da Click (2001). The next Guru release, Version 7.0: The Street Scriptures, arrived in 2005 on his new label, 7 Grand Records; the album featured beats by Solar, who would prove to be an important contributor on additional 7 Grand releases. The fourth volume of Jazzmatazz, including the typical array of guest vocalists and instrumentalists, was issued in the summer of 2007, along with the “raw” companion disc Guru’s Jazzmatazz – The Timebomb: Back to the Future Mixtape. Guru 8.0: Lost and Found, the rapper’s next 7 Grand full-length, followed in 2009. Premier continued his production activity, working with superstars such as Jay-Z, Nas, and Common, as well as underground rappers such as Royce da 5’9″, Termanology, and NYG’z; he even dabbled in mainstream pop, most notably working extensively with Christina Aguilera on her double-disc album Back to Basics (2006).

As for Gang Starr, Guru and Premier did reunite for The Ownerz (2003), a celebrated return to form, but the reunion proved short-lived, leaving back-catalog collections such as Mass Appeal: The Best of Gang Starr (2006) to fill the void. Sadly, Guru died at age 43 on April 19, 2010 after battling cancer, suffering a heart attack, and for a time falling into a coma.

Erykah Badu – Discography (1997-2010) [FLAC]

Erykah Badu – Discography (1997-2010) [FLAC]
flac – lossless | 2.27 GB | R&B, Soul, Hip-hop

She grew up listening to ’70s soul and ’80s hip-hop, but Erykah Badu drew more comparisons to Billie Holiday upon her breakout in 1997, after the release of her first album, Baduizm. The grooves and production on the album are bass-heavy R&B, but Badu’s languorous, occasionally tortured vocals and delicate phrasing immediately removed her from the legion of cookie-cutter female R&B singers. A singer/songwriter responsible for all but one of the songs on Baduizm, she found a number 12 hit with her first single, “On & On,” which pushed the album to number two on the charts.

Born Erica Wright in Dallas in 1971, Badu attended a school of the arts and was working as a teacher and part-time singer in her hometown when she opened for D’Angelo at a 1994 show. D’Angelo’s manager, Kedar Massenburg, was impressed with the performance and hooked her up with the singer to record a cover of the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell duet “Precious Love.” He also signed Badu to his recently formed Kedar Entertainment label, and served as producer for Baduizm, which also starred bassist Ron Carter and members of hip-hop avatars the Roots on several tracks. The first single, “On & On,” became a number one R&B hit in early 1997, and Baduizm followed it to the top of the R&B album charts by March. Opening for R&B acts as well as rap’s Wu-Tang Clan, Erykah Badu stopped just short of number one on the pop album charts in April. Her Live album followed later in the year.
In 2000 she returned with her highly anticipated second studio album, Mama’s Gun, which was co-produced by Badu, James Poyser, Bilal, and Jay Dee and contained the hit single “Bag Lady.” Worldwide Underground, a loose affair billed as an EP despite being longer than many full-lengths, was released in 2003. Her next step, 2008′s New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War, was a heavy and abstract release featuring collaborations with the members of Sa-Ra and Georgia Anne Muldrow; it reached number two on the Billboard 200 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. New Amerykah, Pt. 2: Return of the Ankh, looser and more playful than Pt. 1, followed in 2010.

1997 – Baduizm
1997 – Live
1999 – Southern Gul [Single]
2000 – Mama’s Gun [UK Version]
2003 – Worldwide Underground
2008 – New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War
2010 – New Amerykah, Pt. 2: Return of the Ankh]

Eric B. & Rakim – Studio Album Discography (1987-1992) [FLAC]
flac – lossless | 1.93 GB | Hip-hop

They never had a mainstream hit of their own, but during rap’s so-called golden age in the late ’80s, Eric B. & Rakim were almost universally recognized as the premier DJ/MC team in all of hip-hop. Not only was their chemistry superb, but individually, each represented the absolute state of the art in their respective skills. Eric B. was a hugely influential DJ and beatmaker whose taste for hard-hitting James Brown samples touched off a stampede through the Godfather of Soul’s back catalog that continues up to the present day. Rakim, meanwhile, still tops fan polls as the greatest MC of all time. He crafted his rhymes like poetry, filling his lines with elaborate metaphors and complex internal rhymes, and he played with the beat like a jazzman, earning a reputation as the smoothest-flowing MC ever to pick up a mic. His articulation was clear, his delivery seemingly effortless, and his influence on subsequent MCs incalculable. Together, their peerless technique on the microphone and turntables upped the ante for all who followed them, and their advancement of hip-hop as an art form has been acknowledged by everyone from Gang Starr to the Wu-Tang Clan to Eminem. While certain elements of their sound might come off as slightly dated today, it’s also immediately clear how much of a hand Eric B. & Rakim had in leading hip-hop into the modern age.

Eric B. was born Eric Barrier in 1965 in Elmhurst, Queens; his future partner, William Griffin, Jr., was born in 1968 and also hailed from the suburbs of New York, specifically Wyandanch, Long Island. At age 16, Griffin converted to Islam and adopted the name Rakim Allah. Barrier played trumpet and guitar early on, but switched to the turntables in high school, and eventually landed a job as the mobile DJ for radio station WBLS. It was there that he met Rakim, and the two officially formed a partnership in 1985. Their first single — “Eric B. Is President” (an ode to Barrier’s DJ skills) b/w “My Melody” — was released on the tiny Harlem-based indie label Zakia. It was a street-level sensation during the summer of 1986, and the duo was picked up by the larger 4th & Broadway imprint. The equally monumental singles “I Ain’t No Joke” and “I Know You Got Soul” sampled James Brown and his cohort Bobby Byrd, respectively, and their utter funkiness began to revolutionize the sound of hip-hop. Moreover, Rakim’s line “pump up the volume” on the latter track was in turn sampled itself, becoming the basis for M/A/R/R/S’ hit of the same name.

In 1987, 4th & Broadway issued the duo’s full-length debut, Paid in Full; accompanied by a mighty underground buzz, the record climbed into the Top Ten on the R&B LP charts (as would all of their subsequent albums). Additionally, the British DJ duo Coldcut remixed the title cut into a bona fide U.K. smash. The exposure helped make “Paid in Full”‘s drum track one of the most sampled beats this side of James Brown’s “Funky Drummer”; it provided the foundation for Milli Vanilli’s “Girl You Know It’s True,” among many other, more credible hits. On the heels of Paid in Full, Eric B. & Rakim signed with MCA subsidiary Uni and consolidated their reputation with another landmark hip-hop album, 1988′s Follow the Leader. The title cut took its place among the classic singles already in their canon, and Jody Watley soon tapped the duo for a guest spot on her 1989 single “Friends,” which brought them into the pop Top Ten for the first and only time.

The 1990 follow-up Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em proved relatively disappointing from a creative standpoint, although 1992′s slightly jazzier Don’t Sweat the Technique was a more consistent affair that bolstered their legacy. As it turned out, the record also completed that legacy. The duo’s contract with MCA was almost up, and they had discussed the possibility of each recording a solo album. Unfortunately, the resulting tension over the future of their partnership ultimately destroyed it. In the aftermath of the breakup, various legal issues prevented both parties from starting their solo careers for quite some time. The only recording to appear was Rakim’s first solo cut, “Heat It Up,” which was featured on the soundtrack of the 1993 film Gunmen. Finally, in 1995, Eric B. issued his self-titled solo debut on his own 95th Street label. Rakim, meanwhile, signed with Universal and delivered a pair of acclaimed comeback albums, 1997′s The 18th Letter and 1999′s The Master.

1987 – Paid in Full [2009 Remaster]
1988 – Follow the Leader
1990 – Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em
1992 – Don’t Sweat the Technique

Plus special bonus: Rakim – The 18th Letter/The Book of Life [1997]

Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth–Discography (1991-2011) [FLAC]
Flac – lossless | 3.25 GB | Hip-hop

A duo who crafted artful hip-hop in the 1990s, relying on Rock’s smooth beats and clever soul and jazz-filled samples. Mt. Vernon, New Yorkers Pete Rock (a producer/DJ) and rapper C.L. Smooth emerged in 1992 as both a powerhouse performance duo and as prolific producers. Their 1992 album Mecca and the Soul Brother was a hip-hop classic with great cuts including “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” and “Straighten It Out.” They later collaborated with Mary J. Blige for a remix of her song “Reminisce” that effectively merged the two tracks in a re-edited hit. Their next album, The Main Ingredient, appeared in 1994, but they split for solo careers one year later. They also recorded many productions for both hip-hop acts and urban contemporary artists like Johnny Gill.

1991 – All Souled Out

1998 – Rare Tracks (Released only in Japan)

releasenotes

Shabazz Palaces’ Sub Pop debut Black Up breathed indelible soul into the
Seattle duo’s formidable style, an assemblage of chaotic grooves that spun
out, pivoted on a crafty turn, and hightailed it home along the back roads.
The 2011 album cut former Digable Planets member Ishmael Butler’s opaque
mysticism loose on a palette of intricate, dreamy soundscapes provided by
resident producer Tendai Maraire, sacrificing traditional songwriting
conventions like verses and choruses to sojourn to rap’s frayed edges. Ish’s
musings on love resonated in their leveraging of heady imagery with wizened
world-weariness; his songs triumphed in their arrangement of familiar ideas
into peculiar shapes.

Rather than mining Black Up’s fertile retrofuturist boom-bap further, the
group have since decamped to parts unknown. The duo’s latest album Lese
Majesty boasts 18 songs grouped into seven suites, with a subtle science
fiction theme. If that sounds a bit Close to the Edge, get used to it. Lese
Majesty aims to free the group’s songwriting apparatus from its trademark
purposefulness, to chart a course that zags where earlier work zoomed. While
the opening suite “The Phasing Shift” leads with three straight cuts in the
spirit and form of Black Up, the record doesn’t stay in one place for long.
From the moment “They Come in Gold” fades into the undulating drone of “Solemn
Swears”, it’s clear that, for the duo, space is the place.

The “Touch & Agree” suite is a good primer for what to expect from Lese
Majesty. “Solemn Swears” builds on a bed of synth pulses and a playful riff
from Ish before collapsing into “Harem Aria”, a disorienting romp whose upbeat
never hits where it’s supposed to. “Harem” becomes “Noetic Noiromantics”,
which peels a few layers back to tease a hook out of the maelstrom only to
dissipate as quickly as it congealed. Lese’s individual tracks aren’t so much
songs as ramshackle ideas subject to crumble or explode into something
unfamiliar at a moment’s notice. The passage through these movements feels
like an itinerant drift, a conscious rejection of the methodical drive of its
predecessor.
Lese’s moves aren’t always subtle, though; the album gets shiftier as it
progresses, dispensing with the comfort of thematic unity. The run from
“#CAKE” to “Mind Glitch Keytar Theme” flies through tribal drum vamps, Miami
bass, horror soundtrack synths, and a frayed 190 BPM house workout in just a
few minutes, ramping up the intensity before easing off it with the album
closing chillout suite “Murkings on the Oxblood Starway”. This is a producer’s
album, constructed to showcase a versatile sound architecture the same way
Black Up highlighted Ish’s way with words.

Sometimes that means Ish’s vocals are a tool in the production arsenal,
distorted and distended rhythmic elements instead of guiding points. In Lese’s
more erratic passages, Ish is content to toy around with an intriguing turn of
phrase instead of unfurling the impressionistic poetry that electrified Black
Up, but that doesn’t mean this is just an assortment of chants and sketches;
Ishmael’s showcases are a grounding force for a body of songs fixated on the
cosmos.

“Lse-majest” is a capital crime in stricter monarchic societies that loosely
translates to “the offending of royalty.” It’s an appropriate title for the
network of verses Ishmael presents here, which glibly taunt the kings of the
modern rap mainstream for slacking on the job. Questioned about Shabazz
Palaces’ overarching purpose in a recent NPR interview, Ish retorted, “Make no
mistake, this is an attack,” and cuts like “Suspicion of a Shape” (“All you
guys are quantized”) and “…down 155th in the MCM Snorkel” (“The type of MC
you’d be back then is ‘sucka’”) are rife with bile for feted lesser talents.

Similar to recent albums by the Roots and Common, Lese Majesty is an
Armageddon-esque suicide mission to crash into rap’s consciousness in hopes of
tipping it away from a dangerous path. While its peers have set about their
objectives this year with a staunch, unblinking seriousness of purpose, Ish is
more forgiving. The Rucker reminiscence “…down 155th in the MCM Snorkel”
recalls the days of doorknocker earrings, Dapper Dan suits, and fair ones
without pining for a time machine or hawking staid old school invective. These
aren’t condescending “Real Hip-Hop” platitudes: this is a call to arms for
hip-hop’s creative fringe to snatch the reins from a power structure more
interested in self-preservation than the advancement of the culture. The soul
of Shabazz Palaces is pairing next-gen sounds with classic brass-tacks
show-and-prove emceeing, and Lese Majesty tugs those extremes as far as
they’ve ever been pulled; that it never shows signs of wear speaks to the
strength of the bond.

OutKast – Studio Album Discography (1994-2006) [FLAC]
flac – lossless | 4.34 GB | Hip-hop

OutKast’s blend of gritty Southern soul, fluid raps, and the low-slung funk of their Organized Noize production crew epitomized the Atlanta wing of hip-hop’s rising force, the Dirty South, during the mid to late ’90s. Along with Goodie Mob, OutKast took Southern hip-hop in bold and innovative directions: less reliance on aggression, more positivity and melody, thicker arrangements, and intricate lyrics. After Dré and Big Boi hit number one on the rap charts with their first single, “Player’s Ball,” the duo embarked on a run of platinum albums spiked with several hit singles, enjoying numerous critical accolades in addition to their commercial success.

André Benjamin (Dré) and Antwan Patton (Big Boi) attended the same high school in the Atlanta borough of East Point, and several lyrical battles made each gain respect for the other’s skills. They formed OutKast and were pursued by Organized Noize Productions, hitmakers for TLC and Xscape. Signed to Antonio “L.A.” Reid and Babyface’s local LaFace label just after high school, OutKast recorded and released “Player’s Ball,” then watched the single rise to number one on the rap chart. It slipped from the top spot only after six weeks, was certified gold, and created a buzz for a full-length release. That album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, hit the Top 20 in 1994 and was certified platinum by the end of the year. Dré and Big Boi also won Best New Rap Group of the Year at the 1995 Source Awards.

OutKast returned with a new album in 1996, releasing ATLiens that August; it hit number two and went platinum with help from the gold-selling single “Elevators (Me & You)” (number 12 pop, number one rap), as well as the Top 40 title track. Aquemini followed in 1998, also hitting number two and going double platinum. There were no huge hit singles this time around, but critics lavishly praised the album’s unified, progressive vision, hailing it as a great leap forward and including it on many year-end polls. Unfortunately, in a somewhat bizarre turn of events, OutKast was sued over the album’s lead single, “Rosa Parks,” by none other than the civil rights pioneer herself, who claimed that the group had unlawfully appropriated her name to promote their music, also objecting to some of the song’s language. The initial court decision dismissed the suit in late 1999. (The Supreme Court later allowed the lawsuit to proceed; the two parties eventually reached a settlement.)

Dré modified his name to André 3000 before the group issued its hotly anticipated fourth album, Stankonia, in late 2000. Riding the momentum of uniformly excellent reviews and the stellar singles “B.O.B.” and “Ms. Jackson,” Stankonia debuted at number two and went triple platinum in just a few months; meanwhile, “Ms. Jackson” became their first number one pop single the following February. Both of those major singles and most of the album material — all but three contributions from Organized Noize, in fact — were produced by a trio dubbed Earthtone III (aka André 3000, Big Boi, and David “Mr. DJ” Sheats).

2003′s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, a double album, debuted at number one and spawned a pair of number one singles: the Dré-fronted “Hey Ya” and the Big Boi-fronted “The Way You Move.” Speakerboxxx, more true to OutKast’s past, could have been issued as a Big Boi solo album, while The Love Below, a diverse and playful affair, could have been an André 3000 release. Regardless of its dual nature, the set won the 2004 Grammy for Album of the Year. As breakup rumors continued to swirl, the duo returned with the feature film Idlewild — a musical set in the Prohibition-era South — and an extremely eclectic soundtrack billed as a proper OutKast album. Big Boi issued a solo album, Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty in 2010, while André 3000 produced and/or appeared on a series of tracks by the likes of John Legend (“Green Light”), Beyoncé (“Party”), Lloyd (“Dedication to My Ex [Miss That]),” and Young Jeezy (“I Do”).
